What is a Vasectomy?

Vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure that blocks sperm from reaching the semen ejaculated from the penis. Although semen still exists, it’s sperm-free. This procedure, chosen by over 500,000 U.S. men annually, is one of the most effective methods of birth control.

Procedure Overview:

1. The procedure is explained fully, with any questions or concerns addressed ahead of time
2. One small incision is made to reach the vas deferens
3. The vas deferens is anesthetized, isolated, and a small portion is removed
4. The cut ends are cauterized
5. Steps are repeated on the other vas
6. Skin incisions are closed with dissolvable stitches

Post-Vasectomy Expectations:

• Discomfort and mild pain are common but manageable with mild pain medication, severe pain may indicate an issue warranting a visit to our office.
• Swelling and pain can be eased with ice packs and supportive undergarments.
• Possible formation of a benign lump (granuloma) from sperm leakage which usually improves over time.
• Avoid strenuous activities after immediate return home from procedure.
• Most men fully heal in less than a week, often returning to work the next day.
• Resumption of sex within a week, but other birth control methods are required until a semen analysis confirms the vasectomy’s effectiveness.

Comfort Option

Although the vasectomy procedure is normally quite comfortable, some patients experience a heightened anxiety level related to concerns of discomfort.
